The president of the Club of Istria Democratic Party (ISDS) in the Croatian parliament

Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 7:02 AM

Friday 23 March 2007. 18:20

The president of the Club of Istria Democratic Party (ISDS) in the Croatian parliament Damir Kajin stated on Friday that the true owners of the diamonds and jewelry mentioned in the General Vladimir Zagorec affair affair are the victims from the Jasenovac concentration camp.

Kajin said that the Catholic Church, which had held the expropriated diamonds for a half century, had turned them over to then President of Croatia Tudjman in the early 1990s.

“Tudjman,” Kazin told Croatian YV, “ then transferred them to General Zagorec, who was supposed to bargain with them for arms for defense. What he did with them I do not know, but I know that by that act the Church once again murdered the innocent victims of Jasenovac.”

He added among other things that it is not clear what General Zagorec did with such wealth, noting that before the war he was just a bus driver.

The IDS president further said: “Today this treasure is valued at more than a half billion Euros. Such things were permitted under President Tudjman’s system. The real aggressor against the Republic of Croatia is that system.”

Zagorec, who was in charge of procuring arms during the war in Croatia, has been charged by the Zagreb court for misuse of many millions of Euros from the funds he had at his disposition for the acquisition of weapons for the Croatian Army through illegal channels.

In the last fifteen years Zagorec rose from the status of common laborer to the rank of general with many decorations, to become one of the wealthiest Croats. He started out as driver for the Vice-Minister of Defense but rapidly became a general with more decorations than President Tudjman and was one of his insiders.

After Tudjman’s death Zagorec left the Ministry of Defense and hurriedly went to Austria to reside.

Croatia cursed by crime and corruption

Britain’s Foreign Office is warning visitors to Croatia this summer to beware of a threat from organised crime, following a number of assassinations and attacks on prominent figures, reports Matt Prodger.

Irena Scuric shows Matt Prodger the scene where Ivo Pukanic was killed

„We heard a very loud and low noise, something like voooom!“

On the evening of 23 October 2008, Irena Scuric was eating pizza with her daughter in a restaurant less than a minute’s walk from the offices of one of Croatia’s most popular newspapers, Nacional, when they heard a blast.

„We saw the car, which was burnt,“ she tells me, pointing at parking bay number 38, the tarmac of which is still pitted with shrapnel scars.

„There was a little bit of smoke around and the doors were open. And then we saw two bodies covered with plastic.“

The bodies were those of Ivo Pukanic, Nacional’s editor, and its marketing chief Niko Franjic, killed by a bomb planted beneath the car.

Ivo Pukanic was a controversial figure – an outspoken journalist who wrote about organised crime. He had friends in high places, including Croatia’s president, and in low places, with close links to one of the country’s most notorious gangsters.

Most agree that it was his stories about a Balkan cigarette smuggling operation which cost him his life.

Two weeks before Ivo Pukanic’s murder, 26-year-old Ivana Hodak, the daughter of a well-known lawyer, was shot dead in the stairwell of her apartment block in central Zagreb.

Did gangsters murder Ivana Hodak in a message to her father?

Police say they have now caught her murderer – a homeless man, who they say acted alone.

Others are sceptical, and tell a murkier tale which dates back to the Balkan wars, and involves a former general, missing gemstones, a kidnapping and a prominent mobster.

I caught up with Ivana’s father, Zvonimir Hodak, shortly after his client, the former general Vladimir Zagorec, was jailed for seven years for stealing gems meant to fund Croatia’s war effort in the 1990s.

He does not believe the police story of his daughter’s death, and believes she was murdered by criminals with an interest in the Zagorec case.

„I’m convinced that this was a message to me from some organisation,“ he tells me, as we sit beneath a framed photo of his daughter on the wall of his office.

„They knew that if they killed her they would hurt me most,“ he says, his voice breaking with emotion.

„I wish they had killed me.“

This is not the picture postcard Croatia familiar to visitors to the Dalmatian coast. The latest advice from the British Foreign Office warns of „an underlying threat from terrorism and organised crime in Croatia“.

Murky past

We like to say that where Italy is a state with a mafia, Croatia is a mafia with a state

Goran Flauder
Journalist

The murders of Ivo Pukanic and Ivana Hodak, together with a spate of attacks on journalists and businessmen, have confirmed a belief in the minds of many Croats that their country is in the grip of powerful mafia whose roots lie in the international embargo against Yugoslavia in the early 1990s.

Robbed of trade revenue and legitimate supplies of weapons, the constituent republics, including Croatia, turned to smuggling. Those criminals of yesteryear became the powerful businessmen of today.

In Vukovar I met respected journalist Goran Flauder, who has written investigative articles about some these men – and been physically attacked six times.

„We like to say that where Italy is a state with a mafia, Croatia is a mafia with a state,“ he says.

„Nobody asks these businessmen how they earned their first million. But this first million is the key to their social position and their success. They didn’t break their connection with organised crime.“

He says that a state prosecutor to whom he took his findings refused to pursue the cases for fear of being killed himself.

Gordan Malic is another journalist who now relies on police protection.

„Organised crime has become part of the establishment,“ he says.

„It’s a problem to recognise it, to see what makes it different from the other parts of the establishment.

„And it organises itself far better than the country, than the government, and the society.“

Car bombs are one thing, corruption another, and you do not have to go far to find it. The newspapers are full of stories of dodgy dealings and prominent figures with unexplained wealth.

The deputy head of Croatia’s privatisation fund is currently on trial after he was secretly filmed by prosecutors apparently stuffing a brown envelope filled with money into his pocket. The pictures were all over the newspapers, the film is on YouTube (in Croatian).

The Index of Economic Freedom recently ranked Croatia below several African states in one of its corruption measurements.

Crackdown

„You can see corruption with government officials and practically ministerial-level people with wealth that cannot be explained,“ says Natasha Srdoc from the anti-corruption think tank the Adriatic Institute for Public Policy.

We are all equal under the law

Ivan Simonovic
Justice Minister

„So the question is – how did they amass such huge amounts of wealth in Croatia? And that’s our problem in Croatia because these things we cannot deal with from within. You know, you really need external pressure.

„Croatia needs to put an independent judiciary, the rule of law, and protection of property rights in place before it gets into the EU, because if it is allowed to get in before then it will not reform – it won’t do anything.“

Croatian police recently arrested a number of suspects in a mafia crackdown.

Justice Minister Ivan Simonovic has vowed to confiscate criminal assets, step up witness protection and fast track corruption cases.

When I interviewed him he rejected claims that there was a glass ceiling above which senior politicians and officials need not fear prosecution.

„We are all equal under the law,“ he said.

The crackdown has been prompted by Croatia’s desire to join the European Union (on 1 April Croatia became a member of Nato). But some here, like politics professor Zarko Puhovski of Zagreb University, complain of double standards.

„If you have Bulgaria and Romania in the European Union, if you have a divided Cyprus, if you have Greece with all the corruption and problems with its judiciary, if you have Baltic states with catastrophic minority politics and so on, then you can’t see why Croatia has to commit itself to all these reforms before being accepted.“

Others suggest that some EU member states opposed to further expansion have exaggerated Croatia’s problems with organised crime and corruption in order to damage its accession prospects.

If Croatia is to become a member of the EU within the next two years, as it hopes, it has been told it will have put its house in order first. The question is: does it have the time, or ability, to do so?

Matt Prodger’s report for Crossing Continents can be heard on Thursday 16 April 2009 at 1100 BST, on BBC Radio 4, or on Monday, 20 April at 2030 BST.

Godišnjica savezničkog bombardovanja

Several  years ago  I got in contact with  a military historian, USAAF veteran who actually flew mission over Belgrade on April 16th. 1944.
I did not open my cards right away but enquiried about the flight procedures, target acquisition. I checked flight manifests and orders of the day and found very little, like major bombing raid never happened.
I asked him how is it possible that there is so little information of the raid and is there a possibility that the records were edited. His explanation was that Belgrade was not a primary target but  target of opportunity for bombers returning from Ploesti oilfields. He also told me that he remembers Belgrade as a town in silver crosshairs (Sava and Danube rivers). Also, that it was impossible to hit the target with precission, errors were up to 2000 ft and that’s why carpet bombing with 1000 lbs bombs was done.
I took the map of Belgrade and drew circles from railways and bridges. Some civilian targets could be understood as aiming errors but the majority can not. Dense populated areas were deliberately chosen.
The question is – why?
My next message was straightforward and I requested clarification. I asked if  Belgrade was indeed a target for bombers returning from Romania, why ordnance inscriptions „Happy Easter“ were written when Romanian civilians celebrated Easter a week earlier, April 9 and why it was written in Serbian? Could it be that Belgrade April 16th was a primary target? If Belgrade and other Serbian civilian targets  were secondary target for bombers returning from Romania, how is  possible that Belgrade was bombed until September and Ploesti fell in Red Army hands in August?
Our correspondence abruptly stopped. I got no response from him. For someone who lived in totalitarian state and learned to read the cues, it was more than enough.
This story has not been told yet.

Mass Murder: Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Urban Bombing

War is hell and Hitler started WWII. He persuaded his followers that their
„moral superiority“ excuse them from being human  and having mercy towards their victims.

Almost 60 years later, we struggle to answer the question: was it the
universal crime or it is crime only because Hitler lost the war?

Schrecklichkeit,  “we’ll meet again” way

„We’ll meet again,
Don’t know where,
Don’t know when,
But I know
We’ll meet again
Some sunny day.“
-Vera Lynn, singer, 1942

When Winston Churchill became Prime Minister May 10 1940, he appointed
Frederick Alexander Lindemann as his adviser. Soon Lindemann air doctrine
followed, an adaptation of ideas of Italian fascist general Giulio Douhet.
Inflict maximum casualties to civilians to break morale of the men fighting
on the front. The crown jewel of Lindemann doctrine is fan-patterned
firebombing of Dresden. (Firebombing is newspeak for achieving effects of
atomic bomb by conventional explosives.) Dresden had no industry. It was
cultural center protected by treaty between Germans and Britons.

Air Marshall “Bomber” Harris summed it up: „Whenever the fact that our
aircraft OCCASIONALLY (emphasis BP) killed women and children is cast in my
teeth I always produce this example of the blockade, although there are
endless others to be got from the wars of the past. “

Up to 2 million German civilians were killed “occasionally” in British area bombing

and American “precision bombing” of German cities.

„They reaped what they sow“ one may rightfully say. But what about others?

Civilians in occupied Europe were also “occasionally” targeted, especially
on Christian religious holidays. They were bombed, although they did not
follow Hitler’s murderous path, even when fought against Hitler and were
recognized as allies.

During only one such air raid, USAAF air raid on Belgrade, (Orthodox Easter
Sunday, April 16 1944)  more than 2000 Serbian civilians were killed, two
times more than Luftwaffe killed in Rotterdam, 4 times more than Luftwaffe
killed in Coventry. Damage to German occupying forces was insignificant.
USAF boasted that U.S. bombers equipped with the „top secret“ Norden bomb
sight could drop a bomb „into a pickle barrel.“
What happened? Official USAAF history explains that Belgrade residential
quarters were bombed by navigational error.  But it does not explain why
more than 6000 Serbs were killed in Nish and Pirot, some 200 miles away. Nor
it explains why, if the target was indeed Romania, “Happy Easter” greetings
found on unexploded ordnance were written in Serbian. Gratitude for saving
500 American  Airmen behind enemy lines, perhaps.

By comparison, the railroads leading to death camps – Dachau, Auschwitz,
Belsen, Jasenovac and many others were not destroyed. Death factories worked
full time. Protection of ENIGMA secret.
Nazi production for military was unharmed also.

Hiroshima could be understood as an effort to shorten the war. Regardless of
historical evidence stating otherwise.

But how to understand Nagasaki  August 9 1945  11:02 A.M.?
And how to approve it?

Lindemann doctrine continued to live after WWII.
Rolling thunder over Viet Nam, secret  bombing of Cambodia 1970,  precision
bombing of shelters in Iraq 1991.

Schrecklichkeit,  humanitarian way

„I think no power to your refrigerator, no
gas to your stove, you can’t get to work
because the bridge is down – the bridge on
which you held your rock concerts — and
you all stood with targets on your heads.
That needs to disappear at 3 o’clock in the
morning.“
— Lt. Gen. Michael Short, US Air Force Commander, May 12 1999

Demonization and dehumanization of victims is part of Schrecklichkeit, Nazi
way, „we meet again“ way or humanitarian
way.

Perceived moral superiority over victims also.

Napalms did not incinerate Vietnamese, only “gooks”, “Charlies” and “me love
good”.
Cluster bombs were not murdering children and old people on marketplaces in
Serbia, it was humanitarian intervention.
“Do you still wanna be a Serb” read inscription on unexploded ordnance.

The same question could be sent back.

We have seen jingoist support for those crimes here on this list as well, in
form of  „humanitarian“
moralism from  “uebermensh” position.

And this list is dedicated to prevention of Genocide !

My family had been bombed by Luftwaffe in 1941, by USAAF and RAF in 1944 and
by
USAF, RAF and Luftwaffe  in 1999.

The difference? Hitler’s Luftwaffe did not use plutonium laced depleted
uranium ammunition.
Nazis did not pretend to be humanitarians and there was no CNN  in Hitler’s
time.

Professor Rubinstein, please rest assured, no one will charge elderly G.I.
generation for war crimes over skies of Germany and Japan
They WON the war. No one will charge their Generation X grandsons for what
they did over skies of Serbia and Iraq. Maybe in this
moment,as you read this.

For that reason, please reflect on message Professor Rummel sent.

Were Germans and Japanese not humans?

Is it difficult to say after sixty years: Yes, it was war crime, but
War is hell and we did not start it.

We should fight to prevent wars, not fight to prevent the truth coming out.

Professor Rummel, firebombing of Hamburg, Darmstadt, Heilbronn, Kassel,
Magdeburg Würzburg, Wuppertal, Weser, and Dresden was done by “alliance of
democracies”. Alliance of democracies are not deterrent for criminal mind.

The same as “alliance of democracies” was not deterrent to prevent
contamination of the Balkans with nuclear waste, to prevent use of cluster
bombs on civilian targets, destruction of water supply, electrical grid It
was not to prevent ‘navigational errors” such as bombing of passenger
trains, bridges and hospitals.

Nowadays, wars are fought from 15,000 ft  against the enemy and from all
media towards
own population. Supporting it is just another way to pull the cluster bomb
release trigger.

Please think about it.

inevitably

the community-the industrial workers, whose morale and sticking power
cannot be expected to equal that of the disciplined soldier.“
– John Slessor quoted in Max Hastings, Bomber Command (1979)

[5] .“ In reality, an estimated one-half of U.S. bombs were
dropped through cloud cover or at night where the average bombing error was
about three miles off target. And of those bombs dropped in daylight under
clear conditions, at most half fell within one quarter mile of the target
point (John Ellis, Brute Force: Allied Strategy and Tactics in the Second
World War [1990].

had bombed Germany through a solid cloud cover. This was politically
sensitive;
our air staff maintained that we were practicing only precision bombing on
military targets. But the censors released my story when I pointed out
the obvious–Germans on the ground and the Luftwaffe attacking bombers
knew the clouds were there.
The truth was not being withheld from Germans but Americans.”
Walter Cronkite, Newsweek, February 25, 1991

„People died within seconds of being subjected to the unimaginable heat,
dying from oxygenlack, carbon monoxide poisoning, even incandescence“ (Chaz

Dresden Death toll:
The Americans and British have tried to reduce the figure to 60,000, which
is absurdly low, while „the German Federal Bureau of Statistics in Wiesbaden
claims that it was 600,000“ (Janusz Piekalkiewicz, The Air War: 1939-1945
[1985]).

The reason for bombing Dresden

„I feel that our air forces are the blue chips with which we will approach
the post-war treaty table, and that this operation will add immeasurably to
their strength, or rather to the Russian knowledge of their strength.“

The purpose of the Project for the Exposure of Hidden Institutions (PEHI) is to put together the entire spectrum of highly influential but low-profile organizations which appear to shape the world from behind the scenes. It’s a grass-roots effort carried out by a person with absolutely zero „inside“ sources. Although information will continue to be gathered on such organizations as Le Cercle, the 1001 Club, and the Pilgrims Society, in the future focus will shift to more loose networks and other, related topics.

SMOM member Kurt Waldheim, the secretary general of the United Nations who had to resign in 1986 after he was accused of war crimes, was a favorite of Otto. Otto was honored by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in February 1988. On 19 August 1989 he was the Patron of the Paneuropean-Picnic in Sopron , which was a protest against the Iron Curtain. Since 1988 he worked on the extension of the Paneuropa Union into the countries behind the Iron Curtain, on the independence of the Baltic States from Moscow , and of Croatia , Slovenia , Bosnia-Herzgovina and Macedonia from Belgrade ( Serbia ). He is considered an enemy of the Serbs. When Croatia (90% roman catholic) and Slovenia (84% roman catholic) withdrew from Yugoslavia , the Vatican immediately supported the action, together with the German government. 1994, Jean-Paul Picaper, ‚Otto de Habsbourg: Memoires d’Europe‘, pp. 209-210 (Otto to a Figaro correspondent): „If German recognized Slovenia and Croatia so rapidly, even against the will of [then German foreign minister] Hans-Dietrich Genscher who did not want to take that step, it’s because the Bonn government was subjected to an almost irresistible pressure of public opinion. In this regard, the German press rendered a very great service, in particular the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Carl Gustav Strohm, that great German journalist who works for Die Welt.“ In the late 80s and early 1990s, Otto invited leaders from Croatia and Slovenia to the European Parliament. He visited these countries and stated they should prepare themselves for a place in the European Union. Habsburg and his allies warned about Milosevic, who had just become a prominent former-communist socialist nationalist and wanted to unite all land where a significant amount of Serbians (mainly eastern orthodox christians) lived. Civil wars followed in which the Serbians ultimately were driven back south and east into Serbia . German, US, an UK intelligence services, together with special forces, were secretly funding the (also quite brutal) opposition to Serbia . NATO also bombed the Serbs twice. Otto had called for the bombing of Belgrade (capital of the Serbs) in 1993. Some fear that Otto would like to see Serbia removed from the map, as he blames this nation for the downfall of his beloved Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 2005 Carla Del Ponte, chief prosecutor of the UN international criminal tribunal for the former Yugoslavia , claimed that the Vatican protected suspected war criminal general Ante Gotovina, a hero in Croatia .
