Kosovo: Serbs protest as minister holds talks with UN official
Belgrade, 25 August (AKI) – Several hundreds of Kosovo Serbs protested on Monday at the border with Serbia as the Minister for Kosovo Goran Bogdanovic held talks with a senior UN official in Belgrade.
Bogdanovic said he and deputy chief of the UN administration in the breakaway province (UNMIK) Nicholas Hayson agreed on the dynamics of future meetings.
But the talks appeared to have produced no concrete results.
The return of refugees, revival of judiciary system in Serb populated north Kosovo and the inclusion of Serb policemen in the Kosovo police force, topped the meeting’s agenda.
Most Serbs have deserted the Kosovo police, demanding to be under UNMIK, instead of ethnic Albanian command.
“We haven’t gathered to destroy the cameras at the Brnjak crossing, but to show that we oppose the establishing of a border where there is no place for it,” a Kosovo Serb leader Slavisa Ristic told the protest rally in northern town of Zubin Potok.
Another Serb leader, Dragisa Milovic, said the protests will be held as long as necessary “in order to keep Kosovo within Serbia,” Milovic said.
The protest ended without incidents, local officials said.
Local Serbs protested against the installation of a video system at border crossings in Jarinje and Brnjak in northern Kosovo, fearing it was a prelude to re-establishing customs and border control.
The two posts were burned down by the Serbs last February after Kosovo ethnic Albanians declared independence against Belgrade’s will.
Bogdanovic had been due to meet UNMIK chief Lamberto Zanier, but at the last moment the Italian diplomat sent his deputy instead.
In a vaguely worded statement Bogdanovic’s office said the two officials had “exchanged views” on the situation in Kosovo and “presented their views regarding life, work and problems facing Kosovo Serbs.”
Kosovo has been under UN administration since 1999, but UNMIK is in the process of handing over to the European Union mission (EULEX) which Belgrade opposes.
Serbian officials say EULEX’s main mission was to implement an independence plan by a Finnish diplomat Martti Ahtisaari, which Serbia’s ally Russia has blocked in the UN Security Council.
Belgrade remains opposed to Kosovo’s independence – declared in February by majority ethnic Albanian politicians with the support of western powers.
